General Dentistry Q & A

by Dani Benyaminy, DDS

What are standard general dentistry services?

Twice annual dental cleanings and examinations are at the foundation of preventive general dentistry care. These routine appointments, which include keeping x-rays current and providing fluoride treatments, prevent oral problems from developing and allow for early detection and treatment when they do arise.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be extracted?

Not all wisdom teeth require extraction. Those that do are removed most often because of noticeably uncomfortable symptoms, such as pain, swelling, decay or infection. They may also need to be extracted as a preventative measure if they are growing in at an awkward angle or are impacted. Dr. Dani has extensive experience in determining whether a patient should have his or her wisdom teeth removed.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a treatment is used to treat decay located deep inside the tooth. This center portion is called the pulp. The pulp is contained in canals that run from the center of the tooth down to the jaw bone, and contains the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. A root canal uses special techniques and instruments to remove decay from this area. Once the damaged pulp is extracted, the surrounding area is carefully cleaned and a sealant and filler are applied to close the canal. Once the root canal is complete, a crown is installed on top to provide additional strength and stability. A root canal can save a diseased tooth that would otherwise require extraction. Keeping a natural tooth is almost always a better option than having it pulled.

How does Dr. Dani treat TMJ disorders?

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is the joint that connects the lower jaw bone to the skull. It serves as a hinge that enables the jaw to move up and down and side to side. TMJ disorders are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in these joint and its surrounding muscles. Often people who have TMJ experience a clicking sound when opening or closing their mouths which can impede function. This disorder can also cause headaches, ear pain, dizziness, and other uncomfortable symptoms. One of the most effective treatments for TMJ disorder is a wearing a custom-made mouth guard to prevent teeth grinding and clenching while sleeping. Dr. Dani has relieved TMJ pain for countless patients with these specially-designed oral appliances.
